About Exhibition

Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many artists began to show a heightened attention to the entanglement of human and nonhuman life. This turn is not purely aesthetic but carries a conceptual and philosophical dimension, reflecting a broader rethinking of the human position within the natural world. This observation forms the basis of the exhibition The Grass Above Us. We seek to answer the questions: Why do artists and poets so often turn to nature in moments of existential rupture? And how can this tendency be understood through the lens of contemporary ecological thought?

The Grass Above Us brings together works from the private collection of Adam Harber Foundation, featuring eleven artists from different generations. Across more than thirty artworks created in a variety of techniques and media, the exhibition explores themes of loss, destruction, and renewal within the natural world. This selection creates a cohesive environment in which individual pieces, including artworks and poetry, enter into dialogue and construct a multi-layered narrative. Passing through four thematic rooms, the exhibition gradually shifts the viewer’s attention from the corporeal and literally organic merging of human into nature to a state of poetic reflection, culminating in an imagining of the future after catastrophe and reconsideration of humanity’s place in a world of entangled fates. By exposing the shared surfaces of body and earth, the exhibition invites us to rediscover the world where the vitality of nature and the vulnerability of human life are inseparable.

Після початку повномасштабного вторгнення у 2022 році багато художників почали виявляти посилену увагу до зв’язку людського та нелюдського життя. Цей поворот не є виключно естетичним, а має концептуальний і філософський вимір, відбиваючи ширше переосмислення позиції людини у природному світі. На цьому спостереженні ґрунтується концепція виставки Трава понад нами. Ми намагаємося знайти відповіді на питання: чому митці й поети так часто повертаються до природи в моменти екзистенційної кризи? І як можна зрозуміти цю тенденцію через призму сучасної екологічної думки?

Трава понад нами об’єднує роботи з приватної колекції Adam Harber Foundation, створені одинадцятьма художниками з різних поколінь. У понад тридцяти роботах, виконаних у різноманітних техніках і медіа, виставка досліджує теми втрати, руйнування й оновлення у природному світі. Ця добірка створює цілісне середовище, в якому і візуальні, і поетичні твори вступають у своєрідний діалог, формуючи багатошарову розповідь. Проходячи крізь чотири тематичні простори, глядач вирушає у мандрівку від тілесного, буквально органічного злиття людини з природою до поетичної рефлексії, що зрештою приводить до уявлення про майбутнє після катастрофи та переосмислення місця людства у світі переплетених доль. Демонструючи спільну поверхню тіла й землі, виставка запрошує нас заново пізнати світ, у якому життєва сила природи і вразливість людського існування тісно й нерозривно сплетені.
